April is proving to be quite a busy month! Happy to say the Archibald prize finalists were announced today, and my portrait of author Cassandra Golds made the cut! I chose Cassandra as I have already illustrated the covers for three of her novels published by Penguin Books (Clair de Lune, The Museum of Mary Child, and The Three Loves of Persimmon) and I love the imagery she uses in her writing so it seemed like the natural thing to do :)

Sonia Kretschmar - Song of the Dove

Just released! Written by Errol Broome, and published by Walker Books, 'Song of the Dove' is a love story based on the life of Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini. As tragic as any great opera, it was a lovely project to work on, as the 1830's were a lushly decorated time indeed.

For those in Melbourne, the book will be launched Friday April 8, 6.30 - 8pm at Readings Carlton.

It is indeed a good month for awards! My series of covers for Affirm Press' Long Story Shorts has been accepted into the 2011 Communication Arts Illustration Annual. The latest cover in the series is pictured above. Just love doing this series, only one more to go and I'll miss it dearly.

The series also garnered a silver in the Illustrators Australia Awards (published in this months Australian Creative magazine) along with a silver for The Kinglake Cookbook, silver for Smarten Up (Boss Magazine), also pictured, and Bronze for Street Drugs (AFP)

And in not so new news, the belated arrival in the post of the as always lovely 3x3 Annual reminds me to mention I was lucky enough to have 3 series entries accepted: The Kinglake Cookbook, Smarten Up and My Dad's a Wrestler.

Congratulations to all the picturepig stablemates who scored, its a good month for the pigpen!

I'm having a good month with the awards in Feb! I was lucky enough to bag 7 medals in the Illustrators Australia Awards which you can checkout in Australian Creative on the newsstands now as well as getting the Waterhouse illos into the Advertising Series category in Communication Arts. Lew Keilar/ FIRST DATA Whiteboard animation

Made popular by RSA Animate (check them on You tube) white board animating relies on the illustrator to draw without prep sketches or tracing.
This commission for First Data came through Ben Goss of PP and the yello agency in Sydney on very short notice. I felt up to the task based on my own experimentation in filming illustration (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NzrbblRIWw) and gave it a whirl.
The shoot took a day; the camera was on an overhead jib and the whiteboard was laid out flat underneath it. Weird drawing position combined with an audience of the DoP; 3 creatives; a grip; the clients rep; the studio owner and also a junior who just wanted a look, it was, at times, intense!
This is a slightly shortened version. The unedited film was used at a major First Data sales conference and turned dry statistics into something entertaining.

It's titled 'The Bridge'.
It's an uncommissioned piece I'm using in another animatic-style short film slated for production in 2011.

Last night saw the launch of the latest "cook book" endeavour by Melbourne design studio Wolfgang, Shlomo & Max. It was great to have the opportunity to carve a lino print for this project, my first in years. The majority of the book was printed at the Melbourne Museum of Printing, and every illustration printed used the actual lino each artist cut as a printing plate.

From the W,S&M site: "COOKBOOK north/south is a not-for-profit publication, letterpress printed by hand, with a limited edition of 500. Each of COOKBOOK north/south’s ten suburb-inspired chapters feature a lino-cut artwork, short story and three recipes. A unique collection of letterpress forms, typography and colour create the visual identity for each suburb chapter. An unbound publication, COOKBOOK north/south comprises of hand printed individual cards, first offset and then letterpress printed at the Melbourne Museum of Printing".

All profits go to the food charity Second Bite, which redistributes unwanted food to the needy in Victoria & Tasmania, and the book can be purchased here :)

Chris Badger, Head of Art at Clemenger BBDO advertising recently invited me to exhibit my work in Clemenger's Sydney offices in a new space devoted entirely to showcasing interesting art to their art directors and clients. In an environment designed to showcase new and exciting artists as great campaign options, Clemenger are asking illustrators and photographers to participate on a monthly basis.

Chris said "this way we get some great work to look at and the artist gets the chance to get their work seen and sold".

I'm really excited to have my canvases up in front of such a great potential art buying audience who can not only purchase original work but also commission illustration for campaigns.

This was a recent job for SooJin Buzelli for the online mag ai5000. It all started out as a completely different job for PlanSponsor magazine which SooJin also art directs. I submitted 5 ideas including the one below for an article on healthcare reforms but we ended up going for a different concept. However she really liked the skull and said she would keep it in mind for something else if it was appropriate.

Normally when an AD says this I don't get my hopes up too high and never hear about the rough again. To SooJin's credit she came back a couple of weeks later and said she had an article on Equity which would be a perfect fit for the concept but there was one hitch...The format was different and I had to reshape the layout. I said no probs. I've always found coming up with concepts to be the hard bit of the job. Resizing an existing concept was a breeze.

Happy to announce that the latest book for Cassandra Golds, for which I have done the cover, has just been released by Penguin Australia (I also illustrated the covers of her previous novels "Clair de Lune" and "The Museum of Mary Child".

The Australian Publisher's Awards just recently passed and I was happy to be awarded winner with Mel Feddersen , designer of "Best designed Fiction Book ", as well as coming second for "Best designed cover". The title of the book is "A True History of the Hula Hoop- a novel ". The designer gave me the freedom of hand illustrating the cover type in tandem with the illustration which was a rare treat for me. The rest is just a alcohol induced enjoyable blur. At the 2010 Australian Publisher Awards announced last week, Tensy Farlow and The Home for Mislaid Children won "Best Designed Children's Fiction Book" for designer Tony Palmer / Viking Penguin. This is the cover art for the latest doggy detective thriller novel by American writer Spencer Quinn I have done, following 2009's Dog On It. Having made a character for the main protagonist Chet the dog detective, the ideas were much easier to formulate, bit noir, it could be turned into a strip I think!

The images had to stand out from the marketing frenzy.

The Kinglake Cookbook is a collection of meals for everyday family eating by Chris Owen, chef and owner of some of Melbourne's most popular restaurants, who found himself running the kitchen at the Kinglake relief centre after the devastation of the Black Saturday bushfires. It's also the story of how the simple act of preparing and sharing a meal can help stitch a community back together again.

Deans work throughout the book illustrates the advice, spirit and humour that helped both the people affected by the fires, as well as those pitching in during the months following Black Saturday

The Kinglake Cookbook will be released on the 7th of February to coincide with the first anniversary of the fires. All profits from the sale will go to bushfire relief.

Sonia more or less did everything else- wrote the story, directed, animated, edited, mostly using a combination of Photoshop and After Effects. The tale was inspired by a recent trip to the Australian outback. Feral animals journey across an inhospitable landscape in search of their dreams... but are they really cut out for this place?

This commission originally had Steve Mcqueen to be depicted as a full body shot, split-down-the-middle fashion disaster on one side/ fashion icon on the other as the way to illustrate the "do's" and "don'ts" of mens fashion. I argued Steve McQueen, being a Mens Style kinda guy, should NEVER be anything but cool. So the guys in the lineup became the faceless fashion criminals and Steve the exemplar of mens' chic. The layout also allowed me to do a more detailed character study of a truly classic Hollywood star.

Clemenger BBDO Adelaide launched MAC South Australia's new Drink Driving campaign. All illustrations, custom typography and graphics were created by The Milk Agency. It was a fun project to be involved in as it's centered around mock beer labels with messages suggesting alternatives to driving home after a night of drinking. The illustrated labels have been made into coasters and distributed to Pubs in SA, along with the posters. Sydney's Child has a cover done by me which is nice. I had to pick a colour that wasn't like previous ones, like blue (thanks Christopher!) well orange seemed to make sense, think of summer with that bushfire haze looming. Whacko the diddlio.

Dean Gorissen has illustrated a new book written by Matt Zurbo, about young Louie and his hero worship for his Dad. It's the story of an overweight, ragged and unshaven storeman by day, who by night transforms into his alter-ego, the overweight, raggedy, unshaven, unknown and pretty much completely unsuccessful Percolator!

None of which matters to Louie, who wants to be a wrestler too, just like Dad!

Oops that should be Sunny, the José Feliciano song... Nevermind. I seem to have developed une fixation pour Thonet with several recent commissions for The Age neswspaper in Melbourne. This undeniable fact presented itself to me after looking at my work and discovering two classic Thonet chairs in two illos for the same newspaper. Also I seem to be obsessed with red backgrounds somewhat. Coincidence? Formidable!

This is one of two images appearing in the Illustrators Australia 20 Year Anniversary exhibition at the Northcote Town Hall as part of the Northern Exposure Festival . Organised by the Victorian branch with Jody Pratt at the helm, this was a major initiative celebrating two decades of trends, fads and masterpieces within our industry. An opportunity for members to resurrect ancient artifacts from a previous incarnation and for Lew that included this less-than-subtle piece from a time when airbrushes roamed the earth.

Stuart created his first ever animation for Boccolatte Design to be aired at the '09 Sydney Film Festival before each movie session. It was briefed in and completed in one and a half days through a very learn as you try stop motion method ( and a lot of praying). It was created using hand cut paper figures and a digital camera and then run through Quicktime pro.
